The Tunnel-Aquarium made of Plexiglas
K-tec’s horizontally built monolithic Plexiglas tube is the largest in the world by far:
- approximately 10 meters in length, 3 meters in diameter, with walls 120 millimetres thick
- weighing approximately 15 tons
- the world’s only horizontally walkable acrylic tube of such large dimensions
- extreme stability despite its 65 tons of buoyancy, with only 1.52 millimetres of deformation in the middle
After more than 14 months of development and a subsequent three-months of construction, the new Atlantic tunnel was installed and opened in Vienna’s Aqua Terra zoo, the “Haus des Meeres”.
PLEXIGLAS® is a statically predictable material of tremendous measurable exactitude. This allows it to be used in the construction of weight-bearing structures, bridges, and more.
